Remarks by Ambassador Liu Xiaoming at the Reception to Celebrate the Launch of Beijing-Pyongyang Flights of Air China
2008-04-10 00:00

Honorable Ri Myong-san, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade,

Honorable Kim Do-jun, Director General of the General Administration of Tourism,

Honorable Kim Bong-hyon, Deputy Director General of the General Administration of Civil Aviation,

Honorable Ambassadors and Heads of Missions,

Comrades and Friends:

In the midst of the blossoms that come to us in April of each year, Air China has successfully launched its maiden flight between Beijing and Pyongyang. I would like to express my warm congratulations to Air China and extend my sincere thanks to all friends from the DPRK and the diplomatic missions in Pyongyang for your marking this signal event by attending this celebration.

The operation of Beijing-Pyongyang flights by Air China will deepen the friendship between the Chinese and DPRK peoples through a new sky bridge, and will promote bilateral cooperation on business and tourism between the two countries. These new flights will also contribute to strengthening communication and exchanges within the international community.

Comrades and Friends,

2008 is a year full of important and happy events for both China and the DPRK, as well as for China-DPRK relations.

In just five days, the famous opera of the DPRK, The Flower Girl, will make its debut in the National Grand Theatre in Beijing. The opera company will then take its performances to many other cities in China. The opera will not only offer the Chinese audiences a unique and fascinating cultural feast, but will also present a scenic vista for China-DPRK friendship in the new century.

On April 28, the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay will be held in Pyongyang. The "lucky cloud" torch will bring with it the friendship of the Chinese people towards the DPRK people and their persistent pursuit of the Olympic spirit. While experiencing the joy of the Olympic Games in the torch relay, the Chinese and DPRK peoples will light the passion of mankind for happiness and harmony and share the noble dream of peace, friendship and progress.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my hearty thanks to the General Administration of Civil Aviation of the DPRK, Air Koryo and other relevant institutions of the DPRK for their kind help in the launching of Air China flights between Beijing and Pyongyang. We are looking forward to your continued support in the future.

Finally, I sincerely wish that the new flights between Beijing and Pyongyang, like the beautiful phoenix on the logo of Air China, will fly high in the vast sky and bring new blessings of hope to the Chinese and DPRK peoples and to friends from all over the world.

Thank you.
